THE GIVEAWAY BASQUET
My main Native North American Elder, my spiritual grandfather William Commanda taught me that we don’t own the Earth but we are only caretakers of the land and that the Earth is our mother. I share with you one of his stories.
“When I was a little boy, we lived on a territory called Ontario today. My grandfather and my great-grandfather were traditional hereditary chiefs of our people and my family lived for many generations on that place. It was our home. Then one day the white-man’s government decided to relocate my people and we have been forced to move and to live here in Quebec. We didn’t want to fight, so we accept it. They escorted us here and they said that’s our reservation now and we have to live here. I grew up and lived here beside this lake almost all my life. This is where we build our first camp with my wife and where we lived and make birch bark canoes, snow shoes, dog sleds and many other artifacts with her. I hunted beaver, moose and many other animals and fished on the lake for living. I was the hereditary and administrative chief of my community for 20 years. After more than 50 years living here, one day a government agent knocked on my door. After he sit down with me at my table and make some compliments about the beauty of the place where I live, showed me a paper and explained to me that the reservation has been divided to lots by the government, but every family has the right to keep living on the same place. Than he showed me another paper and told me that the paper was about to regularize the ownership of the land I was occupying. He said I have to pay one cent and to sign the paper to become legally the owner of the place and he told me that the majority of the people on my reserve already signed it. I told him that I can’t and I won’t sign that paper, because the Earth belongs to the Creator and I don’t have any right to buy it or to sell it to no one. He tried to explain it to me that it is only a symbolic act and this is why only one cent what I have to pay. I told him that the Earth is my mother and my people lived here in this continent and took care of her for thousands of years before the settlers came and I don’t need to buy her and I will never sell her to anyone. He got angry and tried to make pressure on me and said that if I don’t do it, I have to live my home and somebody else will be happy to pay one cent for it. I told him that it’s all right, if I have to go, I will go. I know there is some of my people signed that paper, but I never did and I never will. The government agent never came back and I will live here until I will die.”
Grandfather lived in that house until he died in 2011 at the age of 98. He was the keeper of the sacred “Seven Fire Prophecy” wampum belt and told me a similar story about the belt and ownership. He lived alone on his little pension after his wife passed away and kept making traditional artifacts until his age permitted to do so, but the logging companies cut all the big birch trees and he has to stop making his beautiful birch bark canoes. He was always very kind and welcoming to the people endlessly coming from all continents to knock on his door for spiritual help and guidance.
He held three days Spiritual Gathering called the Circle of All Nations, www.circleofallnations.ca http://www.angelfire.com/ns/circleofallnations/page2.html at his home every year for seventeen years and financed it with his savings from his pension. Two, to three thousand people attended the gathering every year from six continents and he never charged a penny to anybody. Everything was offered from the heart and was shared unconditionally with generosity. We put our hearts, our mind and our will together each year and offered everything we could and worked hard to help him to make it happen. Over fifteen hundred people eat together the last day of the gathering each year and there was still food left for the next day.
Here is his story about the belts:
“All things coming to you from the spirit or from the heart of someone stays forever in your heart, the others things just come and go, we don’t even remember them when they are gone. Many people when they look, they see only money. I call them money people. They look the land and they think how much it worth, how much they can make with it. They look the trees and they think how much they worth, how much they can make with them. They look an animal and they think how much it worth, how much they can make with it. They look at you or even at somebody from their own family and they think how much money they can make with you, how much money you can make for them. They worship money, money is their god. Once, I remember I went in the United States to a museum with other elders to ask them to give back to us a wampum belt, because it’s part of the spiritual heritage of our people. They refused to give it back to us, because they said it was the museum’s property. Later, when I got back home, somebody from that museum came to see me. He asked me if I want to sell the wampum’s to the museum and offered me one million dollar for the Seven Fire belt. I told him that I’m only the guardian of the belts, they belongs to my people and to all the Native North American people of this continent, they are parts of our spiritual and historic memory and heritage and they are not for sale. He shook his head, because he couldn’t believe his ears, that this poor old crazy indian refused a million dollar for a bunch of old beads. I can’t blame him, he doesn’t know, he doesn’t learn better.”
Since 1992 I have been receiving visions about my spiritual purpose in this lifetime and about my role in the healing of the people and the Mother Earth. In one of my vision I saw a healing center where people were healed through all the colors of the rainbow. During the last 31 years I received more guidance from the Spirit and from the Elders, related to that vision. I hope that in this lifetime I will be able to complete the vision and to create that healing center. I do not own land and will never buy a property, but I know if it is meant to be, the right place will come in a spiritual form and from the heart.
